Course Content


Dental Hygienists in Colorado need a Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification at the Healthcare Provider level. Required skills include; Adult, child and infant CPR, AED, and use of a bag-valve-mask. Some Dental Hygienists may also need a First Aid course as well, but this is determined by the employer.



Delivery Method

Dental Hygienists in Colorado are required to do the Basic Life Support level of CPR certification for Healthcare Providers that usually includes a practical skills evaluation through a classroom or blended training process. 100% online CPR will only be an option upon the discretion of the employer or institution and is not always accepted by the state licensing department or for continuing education credits.

Some employers may require a specific type of training or may leave it up to the state’s requirement. If you are not certain of your employer's requirement, make sure to check with them about both the training type and the required course content.

G. Continuing Education Requirements for Dentists, Dentists Issued an Academic License, and Dental Hygienists

7. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers is required of all licensees and all licensees will receive a maximum of two hours continuing education credit (not to be applied towards renewal of an anesthesia permit) for successful completion.

  1. Basic Life Support, or BLS, generally refers to the type of care that first responders, healthcare providers and public safety professionals provide to anyone who is experiencing cardiac arrest, respiratory distress or an obstructed airway. It requires knowledge and skills in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), using automated external defibrillators (AED) and relieving airway obstructions in patients of every age.
  2. BLS training courses shall be consistent with the most current science and treatment recommendations from the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR). Consensus on Science and Treatment Recommendations (CoSTR), and the American Heart Association Guidelines for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).
