Description

Domestic (intimate partner) violence is an international healthcare and human rights issue affecting millions of people every day. Individuals and healthcare providers who understand the causes of violence, recognize the signs and symptoms of abuse, and are knowledgeable in screening and support strategies for victims are critical factors in the early treatment and prevention of this healthcare epidemic.

Objectives

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to do the following:

  • Describe the national and global impact of domestic (intimate partner) violence. Define key terms related to domestic violence.
  • Define key terms related to domestic violence.
  • Identify key historical events related to intimate partner violence.
  • Compare and contrast the various theories of violence.
  • Explain the cycle of violence and why abuse victims may choose to stay in violent relationships.
  • List the health effects of domestic violence.
  • Identify characteristics of perpetrators of intimate partner violence.
  • Compare and contrast the characteristics of types of domestic violence including sexual violence, stalking, abuse among the LGBT community, and adolescent dating violence.
  • Describe signs and symptoms as well as risk factors of intimate partner violence.
  • Explain the elements of effective screening and interventions (including safety issues) for domestic abuse.
  • Identify strategies for the prevention of intimate partner violence.

Criteria for successful completion

Complete the course post exam (CE Test) with a score of 80% or greater. Complete all fields of the course evaluation form. Certificate of Completion is provided once the course post exam is passed per criteria above.
